4. What is the AATSP Policy regarding campaigning?

The following policy regarding campaigning for Board of Directors positions was approved by the AATSP Board of Directors at its meeting of April 13-14, 2007 and updated by the Board of Directors at its meeting of February 1, 2010.

Publicity regarding candidates for AATSP elections will be posted appropriately and solely by the AATSP Headquarters and its chapters. Candidates for the Board of Directors agree to abide by this policy prior to being placed on the AATSP ballot. The Board of Directors reserves the right to remove candidates from the ballot when this policy is not followed.

5. What materials must a candidate provide for the website?

The following policy regarding candidate information to be posted online was approved by the AATSP Board of Directors at its meeting of February 1, 2010.

If selected to be a candidate for the 2017 election, all candidates for AATSP office must submit three items to the AATSP office in order to appear on the ballot: a recent photo, a curriculum vitae (CV) or resume, and a statement of candidacy. The three items are then posted on the AATSP website along with the ballot and the instructions for voting.

NOTE: Do not submit the following items with nominating materials. The three items will be requested only if selected as a candidate. We have included the requirements so potential candidates are aware of what will be required.

The three items must adhere to the following requirements.

1. PHOTO

a. The candidate must submit a photograph that meets the following requirements:

  • Color
  • jpeg format
  • portrait (not landscape) orientation
  • head and shoulders only
  • recent (not more than two years old)

2. CURRICULUM VITAE / RESUME

  • The candidate should submit a brief resume or curriculum vitae (CV) written as a paragraph summarizing the candidate's professional qualifications.
  • The paragraph summary should contain no more than 250 words.
  • The summary paragraph must be sent in digital format.
  • The candidate should also provide the AATSP office with a complete CV in digital format or a link to the candidate's complete CV/resume posted on another website. A link will then be placed on the website at the end of the summary CV so that viewers can access the complete CV.

3. STATEMENT OF CANDIDACY

a) All candidates should provide the AATSP office with a Statement of Candidacy explaining why they are running for office and what they hope to accomplish if elected.

b) The Statement of candidacy should contain no more than 250 words.

c) The Statement should be submitted in two formats:

i. A written Statement of Candidacy in digital format

ii. A video in digitized format of the candidate reading aloud the Statement of Candidacy. Specific guidelines for video format will follow upon candidate selection for the ballot.

iii. The candidates are encouraged to attend the AATSP annual conference prior to the election where they may appear at the annual Business Meeting and read their Statement. For those candidates unable to attend the AATSP annual conference, they must submit the video of them reading the Statement of Candidacy.

6. Who selects the slate of candidates for the election?

The Nominating Committee consists of the out-going members of the Board of Directors plus at least one other national member to be selected by those out-going members. As is customary, the immediate past-president is appointed Chair of the Nominating Committee, and this was done by the Board of Directors at its July 2015 meeting. The Past President of the AATSP serves as a liaison between the Board of Directors and the Nominating Committee; the liaison serves ex-officio without vote.

The 2017 Nominating Committee consists of the following individuals:

Elaine Davis, Chair; Retired; Madison, NJ
Anne Fountain, Liaison to the Nominating Committee; Ex-officio, Non-voting; San Jose State University; San Jose, CA
Paul Chandler; University of Hawaii; Honolulu, HI
Sergio Guzmán; College of Southern Nevada; North Las Vegas, NV
Pam Ottenheimer; Director, Sociedad Hispánica de Amistad (SHA); Newtown, PA
Ana Sánchez-Muñoz; California State University, Northridge; Northridge, CA

The Nominating Committee will conduct its work electronically (via email). The Chair of the Nominating Committee will forward all nomination materials to the 2017 Nominating Committee shortly after the deadline. Each Nominating Committee member will then write a brief evaluation of each nominee's qualifications as outlined on the CV and letters of recommendation. These evaluations are then sent to all members of the Committee for their consideration. Each Committee member then lists all the candidates for each position in rank order. Taking into consideration the rich diversity of our membership and a balanced geographic representation, the two nominees with the highest number of points in each of the slots become the candidates. The Chair of the Nominating Committee then sends the names of each of the candidates to the Executive Director of the Association who will prepare the ballot for distribution to the membership.
